The Gold Coast is a year round destination with a subtropical climate. The quieter and usually better value months are in the shoulder seasons of autumn and spring, outside school holidays. Summer and the school holidays are the busiest, and winter is mild and dry, which is why many southern visitors come in June and July.
In this guide
There is no bad time to visit the Gold Coast, but there are times that suit you better. The answer depends on three things: how much heat you like, how much you mind crowds, and whether your trip has to fall in the school holidays. This guide sets out each month and the dates that matter.
The short answer, by traveller type
- Families tied to school holidays: book early. Summer is the peak, and the other holiday periods fill quickly too.
- Couples and anyone with flexible dates: autumn and spring, outside school holidays, usually give warm days, quieter beaches and better availability.
- Escaping a southern winter: June to August. Winter on the Gold Coast is mild, clear and sunny, which is why Melbourne and Sydney visitors head north.
- Beach and water lovers: December to March has the hottest water and the longest days, along with the crowds.
Month by month
| Months | What to expect | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| December to February | Hot and humid, with afternoon storms. The busiest period of the year | Peak summer school holidays. Book well ahead and expect crowds at the beach and theme parks |
| March to May | Warm and pleasant as the humidity eases | Easter school holidays fall in this window. Outside them it is generally quieter |
| June to August | Mild, dry and sunny days with cooler nights | Winter school holidays in late June and July. Whale watching season is under way |
| September to November | Warm and sunny, with less humidity than summer | Spring is popular and usually quieter, until the spring school holidays begin in late September |
Our own advice to guests is the same. Spring, from September to November, is incredibly popular for warm sunny days and smaller crowds before the peak school holidays begin. December and January bring the peak summer and a busy, bustling atmosphere. Winter, from June to August, suits anyone escaping the cold from a southern city.
School holiday dates
Queensland state school holidays generally run for about two weeks at Easter, two weeks from late June into July, two weeks from late September into early October, and about six weeks over summer. The 2026 holidays are:
| Holiday | Dates |
|---|---|
| After Term 1 | 3 April to 19 April 2026 |
| After Term 2 | 27 June to 12 July 2026 |
| After Term 3 | 19 September to 5 October 2026 |
| After Term 4 | 12 December 2026 to 26 January 2027 |
Other states have their own calendars, and many visitors come from New South Wales and Victoria, especially in winter. If you are travelling from another state, check that state’s education department calendar as well as Queensland’s, because overlapping holidays are what make the coast busiest.
Whale season
Humpback whales migrate past the Gold Coast each year. Tourism and Events Queensland puts the season at roughly June to October, with August as the peak. Some operators run cruises a little earlier or later, so the edges of the season vary. If whales are your priority, aim for the middle of winter and book a cruise in advance.
What about the weather and storms?
Summer is the wettest part of the year, and the typical pattern is a hot, humid day with a storm in the afternoon. Winter has the driest, clearest weather. In any season, check the forecast before you plan a theme park day, because a wet day is better spent at one of the rainy day options in our local guide.
When is it cheapest?
Prices follow demand, so the cheapest times are generally outside the school holidays and outside summer. Late autumn and the weeks between holiday periods tend to be quiet. A stay of seven nights or more with us has a long stay discount applied automatically, which can matter more than the timing of the dates.
Events that change the weekend
The Gold Coast hosts events throughout the year, and some can lift demand and prices for a weekend. If your dates are flexible, check the City of Gold Coast events calendar before you book. If you are travelling for a particular event, book your stay first, because apartments nearby fill early.
How early should you book?
Book as soon as your dates are fixed, and earliest of all if they fall in a school holiday, because those are the weeks everyone wants. If your dates are flexible you have more choice of apartments and of nights. The larger your group, the fewer apartments fit it, so a family of six or seven should book first and plan around the booking.
What to pack by season
- Summer: light clothing, a hat, sun protection and a rain jacket for the afternoon storms.
- Autumn and spring: the same, plus a light layer for evenings.
- Winter: a light jacket for evenings and early mornings. The days are mild and sunny, so you will still want sunscreen.
- Every season: beach and pool towels. Bath towels are provided in our apartments, but beach and pool towels are not.
